Minority Report: My thoughts after 2 days with HTC Dream (G1)
Android phones should be minority in here, I guess.
As some already know, I took the plunge and got HTC Dream and for the first time in my life, I can barely put the phone down for 5 minutes.
And as Matt always ask:"Have you done any work since getting the phone?"
The answer is no, sadly.
So whats' so good about it?
- Android OS, I'm currently running cupcake which is v1.5, telcos at my area takes super long to release updates. But android OS is really showing a
lot of promise.
- Android Market, I only get to see free apps (again restriction from my telco), but the free apps are really cool and extended the functionality of
the phone. Being late to the android party, apps are more or less stable and well-commented and puts me at a lesser risk.
- Almost everything, except photoshop can now be done. Browsing, msn, wordpress, facebook, email, games, music, video, youtube, reading etc. Even GPS
and live traffic conditions broadcast. Did I mention the barcode scanner that allows me to compare prices from local and online?
- Android, is an os with a focus on touchscreen input, so I wasn't expecting anything lesser than slick/fast/responsive with the G1/HTC Dream.
- Oh.. And G1/HTC Dream has QWERTY, which is seriously what I need. I can't type properly with mere touchscreen input. (Droid is not in Asia yet.
)
Whats' not so good
- Android is amazing, but G1/HTC Dream does let it down in terms of hardware, telco restrictions and firmware restrictions. Most apparent issue
would be the inability to store apps onto the sd card UNLESS you root the phone (which means u void the warranty)
- Being open, it means u r open to dangers as well, so it is important to exercise special care and concern choosing apps and setting the relevant
permissions. But being open, means limitless development potential. So "open" is a double-edge sword here.
End of my minority report and more thoughts soon, I'm only with the phone for the 3rd day.

congrats on the phone! how much was it there? i almost got a G1 the last time i was in BKK, but they wanted over 800USD. I got an iphone instead (free
from relative) and I really like it. the touch keypad does not bother me a bit, but i never had any other phone you could really type on before. all
those fun things u mention are what make new phones so great...but i am surprised you don't have photoshop.mobile app for android? it's a free
iphone app and is probably the best in it's class for that kinda play. cheers!

With contract, and promotional pricing, it was $48 (SGD) but I had to top up $100 for early recontractual (No choice as my SE w910i died on me and I
have no other phone for use).
It was an amazing deal too, because people I knew, got the phone few months ago at $400 plus with contract.
In fact this phone without contract is still retailing in the $400+ range to $700. It appears that my telco is clearing the remaining stock and going
on to sell G2(HTC Magic), G3 (HTC Hero), which explains the amazing price.
Sadly, no Photoshop app on android yet, but I believe it would be soon
Android is certainly up and coming.

So far, so good with the Droid. Just tried out Photoshop Mobile. It has a crop, straighten, rotate, flip option. An exposure, saturation, tint, and
B&W option. And a soft focus option. The LED flash overexposes all of my indoor pictures.

Thanks to your msg shadow..
I went scouring online for the photoshop.com mobile app, apparently its only released for US market only.
Nonetheless, I have found the apk and did a manual install on my HTC Dream.
Sadly enough though, photoshop.com after all these months is still restricted to US only. So I can only do offline edits.
