Whenever I've been involved in remixing, we would have the original 16/24 track tape.

We would import it into either Cake Walk or Pro Tools and either add tracks, add effects or vocals, tweaking etc.

well it depends on if ur talkin remixin from a Djs stand point or a Producers stand point....all a Dj wud need is a the Acapella so he can drop it on another instrumental as he need btu a producer may want all the tracks from the song...includin the original instruments...so he can mix i tup as he feels or if he is darin jus use the acapella alone an build a beat to his own likin...

on a pc for my dj remixes i used a progam called Atomix mp3, and as a producer i used Fruity Loops (now called FLStudio) to make beats for it..

Isn't Acid the one that actually opens up pro mixes in the propeirtary format for monthly amateur remix projects? That's something I'd look into for sure... I think I remember someone saying that on the month they were telling me a few years back they had a Cranberries song open for remixing. That way not only would you have the software, you'd have pro recordings to work with and feedback on how you are doing.

I think it's Acid...

I know this is an old thread, but incase anybody else needs help with remixing songs, one very good way to do this is using midi files. If you can find the midi file of the song you want to remix, import it into a program like Reason (that's what I use). Once it's been imported you can change the samples used, add effects ect

If you're producing a remix rather than adding acapellas you'll probably be better off making your own beats and using the midi file for the synths/pads and leads (depending on what your remixing). It can take a while to tinker with the samples and settings ect, but when done properly, you'll have your own unique remix instead of the same song with effects and vocals
