    Oh -- Hardy -- I just identified one of your problems. Your tones are way too close in your skin area which is why the gradients are looking flat. Try recalibrating them with levels, curves, or equalization to bring the contrast up.

    I've been using that tut also for a long time now, i've seen they've added more technique's for this 'The gradientmap technique is the easiest i think, the others work to but more work i think...
