Typography Effect

Hi everyone,

I'm not totally new to Photoshop, and pretty much know my way around, but I'm having trouble with a project I'm working on, and would appreciate any advice

I'm trying to create something very similar to the photo attached, with different text of course.
I've done very little typography up until now, and pretty much don't have any idea where to start with this.
How do I create this kind of 3D characters, and get them to conform to the shape of the different parts of the hamburger? I'm assuming I'd find appropriate textures to color them with, but how do I get them to squeeze into these areas like this?

I think it would be better if you do this in a 3D modeling software, instead of Photoshop. Thought it can be done there, pulling this effect off would be very tedious.
