Apple against Adobe

I thought that apple and adobe were at war with each other... but it's only the half of it. I didn't understand why apple doesn't allow Flash on there iPods, iPads, etc.

But after reading the other side (http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/), I have a little bit more understanding for apple.

I'm thinking of buying a iPad for home use (no 3G) and wanted to know a bit more of it. Like reading my mail would be very important and of course going online to the CAFE...

Now I know.... So my question would be:

Is there a future without flash? In the article they talk about H.264 format....

This is an old letter and old news. I think if you do a search on the forums here, you will find a previous discussion or 2.

Flash supports H.264 video. In fact it has for a number of years.
I love Flash, the majority of video on the web is still Flash.
I love my iOS devices and my iPad
Too bad they aren't playing together happily.

They are pushing for HTML 5 as the future. Of course HTML 5 will never be able to do many of the things that Flash can do. Leave it to greedy business practices to throw everyone back a few years in technology so one company can rule them all.

I hope iOS 5 wil come out soon and they make the iPad a bit easier. I'm searching the web for days know, figuring out how to import the thunderbird mail content into my iPad.

Some other features I miss are the arrow keys to move to the right or left (I know I'm still a windows guy). I'm gonna try to hook my Bluetooth keyboard onto the iPad, for fun and for the in the future use.

I got it to print from the iPad to my Canon printer hooked on a windows computer...

Really enjoyed that article Hermie - thanks! Having done web programming at my work, and having had to edit other people's flash websites I have to say flash can be very cumbersome to edit. It can make it unnecessarily expensive for someone to maintain their website. Also take note when you are viewing an all-flash website, there are no "pages". If you look in the address bar the url never changes so you can't bookmark pages or use forward and back commands in the browser which I find very frustrating.

@aldea - Two issues.

1. Flash is not cumbersome, you just need to have your company hire a Flash developer much like you would Objective-C or plumbing in the office.
2. Flash can/will allow access to multiple "pages" using dynamic deep linking (DDL) the developer has to utilize it much like all other features of Flash.

I still use Flash daily for Fortune 100/50 work though I also use HTML/Javascript. I don't have an allegiance to any one technology, its a job, not a religion.

Hope that distills the "Steve Jobs, Flash is evil" myth.

This topic was meant as a thought in my mind and why I didn't understand there wasn't flash support on an apple. Don't get me wrong that I don't like Flash! I love Flash, I just don't use it.

It's like the new IE 9.... People say it's gonna be the next IE 6!!! I don't believe it but here's an article I found...

The only problem I have had with Flash is the same one mentioned upstream: thus far, and as far as I can tell, the Flash sites I have encountered do not allow me to use my mouse right-click or pen/tablet to simply "click and tap 'Back' "; this forces me to mouse up to the corner and use the Back arrow key. Or Forward of course.

Although this is a minor issue with respect to the big picture, it is one frustrating item.

I have a vague memory of a Flash site that did allow navigation using only right mouse clicks but think the cursor had to move out to a margin.

I am not a programmer but have done some robotic programming and, drum role please- Fortran in college, and am a Mechanical Engineer and good techie orientation.

This site made me laugh since they speak about clean code and standards and all but have tables littered throughout their site. That isn't really an article, just a companies attempt to scare the consumer into "scary browsers".

This is because Flash is an in-browser plug-in that gets loaded into a website. The right click menu is only partially editable. You can added menu entries and remove a few. However with Javascript and ContextMenuItem in Flash you could create a quick little navigation on your own site. Then again you could also use keyboard commands as well.
