    A Happy Future

This passed July 4th weekend God introduced me to my soulmate. What's astounding about this is that she's my first girlfriend, the one I dated when I was 21 (she was sixteen). We broke up after about a year and she married another guy. That was thirty years ago. I have loved this woman ever since, but she was never even an option for me as far as getting back together or even seeing her again. Even though we have lived in the same town all these years we never once ran into each other. Then on Saturday, July 2, I got an email from her. She said she was sitting at home and wondered how I was, what I was doing, and if I was still single. Needless to say this literally knocked me out of my chair. So I called her and we arranged to meet at my apartment. When she arrived I walked outside and we both stood there looking at each other. It was like some scene out of a movie.

We spent the next couple days talking, catching up, crying, laughing, and discovering that we were both destined to be together. I sit here now marveling over the passed month, in awe of God, and His timing. The night of the fireworks we walked out onto the train trestle that sits over the river and watched the festivities with her daughter (Cassie) and a friend of hers. As we were talking to each other she grabbed my arm and said "Look!" I looked up and saw a huge smiley face firework fill the sky. She gasped, "It's a sign!" Indeed it was. I've lived in this town for 35 years and I've never seen a firework shaped like a smiley face. Ever.

Yesterday I decided to draw that scene. Keep in mind I'm no painter or very good at drawing people or real life scenes, but I gave it my best shot. It's still a work in progress as I experiment with coloring the drawing, but I wanted to share it with you all.

So now, thanks to God, we have a happy new future together when neither of us thought such a thing was even possible. We don't have any recent photos to share (we both hate having our pictures taken), but below is a photo of us when we were dating back in 1981. Sorry, it's a bit chewed up.
