500GB Storage on a disc! Move over Blueray

The only question I have is, with all of these rapid advances in file storage; what can we possibly do with the space?

Remember when a gigabyte was a big deal? Heck, I still remember when the Zip disc was a major advancement. ANyway folks, get ready for the 500gb compact disc!

    Very cool.

I wonder how long they can guarantee the integrity of an archive? I could definitely see uses for this.

That's a god question. Working in financials, I could definately see us saving a grand deal of pace using these. LTO tapes are bulky, and other drives don't hold a enough space. Also, soon home releases will hold so much more content that it will be a waste of money to see a video in thearers.

Can anybody say portable OS? Or even a replacement for the traditional hard drive? That is, if they work the lazer technology out properly. If it is truly 3 dimensional and can read multiple layers at once; we could have OSs that load instantly!!!

I'm not sure that's a question on anyone's mind anymore. Only a few years ago I was perfectly happy with my 80GB HD. Now I'm up to almost a TB and am trying to figure out how I want to setup my system for more.

Space is becoming even more important with everyone's music/movie collections moving over into digital format (imagine having all of your bluerays on your computer, that'll take up 500GB in no time).

Granted, the technology might be moving a touch faster than consumers, but I'd rather have it that way than the other!

    Wow sounds really good.

Honestly, 1 pshop file at A3/A2 size is usually around 1gb or more, because of the layers.

I do need the size! But 500gb on a disc might not be that safe, what if the disc broke? I think Im still more inclined towards the traditional harddisks.
