Sun blown out no matter how many stops under

Anyone ever get an underexposed sun? When shooting directly at a setting or any other sun, has anyone ever been able to get a value less than 255/255/255? Canon 5D and 8 stops under still give these values. On film, I would have had a darkish orange ball. Is this a digital issue?

Background; Active pro 29 years, started shooting digital in 1993, studio mostly. Digital equipment Canon 5D, 10D lots of lenses, Leaf Aptus, Imacon, Leaf Volare, Kodak 14N, and Nikon D2s.

    Thanks,
    Kim

hi kim, this may be too basic, but have u tried this metering tip:
    http://www.digicamhelp.com/learn/nature/sun.php
"Meter for the sky, or near the perimeter of the sun, but don't include the sun itself. This helps prevent white, blown-out areas, which lack detail (though some blow-out may be unavoidable). This method also helps the rest of the scene from becoming underexposed."
good luck and don't get blinded by the mundane!

Coocoo - Thanks for the link. Unfortunately it only deals with base exposure. You might notice that neither of the examples has a sun that isn't blown out.

From my testing, I am concluding that the Canon sensor can not handle a direct sun shot even as it is close to setting. I have tried as much as 10 stops underexposed and the sun is still around 250/250/250.

I am wondering if anyone has a different experience or if other manufacturers have chips that can handle this situation.

    thanks,
    kim

yes kim, i did not think that would help much but gave it a shot. i have all canons here too, an older 1d, 300d, and new g10. why don't u post what u are getting and perhaps i can try to recreate in nepali sunlight, or others can have a crack at it with their nikons and leicas. cheers!

ps.now wondering what happens to digital sensors when u point them direct at the sun and leave them there...

That's right, ur camera has ears and a big nose.

This is from the canon g10 manual:
Do not point the camera at bright light sources (the sun in bright clearl skies, etc.). Doing so could damage the camera's CCD. Doing so can damage your eyesight.

Never a fan of canon manuals (this is the first one I've read in years) and point 3 makes little sense. So u point ur camera at the sun and ur eyes burn out? what if the camera is on a tripod and you are reading a book?

But then again this same section in the manual warns you that if you swallow the memory card, to contact a doctor immediately.

    now that's coocoo!

Has anyone seen my memory card? It was right here next to this bag of chips.
