Anyone ever get an underexposed sun? When shooting directly at a setting or any other sun, has anyone ever been able to get a value less than 255/255/255? Canon 5D and 8 stops under still give these values. On film, I would have had a darkish orange ball. Is this a digital issue?

Background; Active pro 29 years, started shooting digital in 1993, studio mostly. Digital equipment Canon 5D, 10D lots of lenses, Leaf Aptus, Imacon, Leaf Volare, Kodak 14N, and Nikon D2s.
