Do you mean, Snap to point or Snap to Grid.

View > Snap to Point. (Shift + Ctrl / Cmd +)

View > Snap to Grid. (Alt / Opt + Ctrl / Cmd +)

    Also Smart Guides are useful.

    View > Smart Guides (Ctrl / Cmd + U)

Git it sorted, sort of, if the squares I want to snap together were drawn with snap to grid on then I can butt them up,if snap to square was not on when they were drawn I cant. Snap to point only works point to point not shapes. Thanks got it half sorted

Are you trying to align and distribute space where objects touch/butt each other (“Kiss Fit”)???

    CS3
    If so, use Align Panel.
Select all your Objects, then select Key object.
    Distribute Space 0

Smart Guides is another way as Daz mentioned

CS4 is a little different with the steps.
Also Smart Guides just got smarter in CS4.

Sam, You ask a lot of questions here at the cafe.
For members to help you better, please provide screen shots of what you are trying to do. Thank you.

Thought of that a while ago but dont know how to create screen shot. I tried smart guides but they do not indicate the "kiss fit" of two sides of squares when butted together, distribute option seems like the answer, many thanks

Sam, Smart Guides does not have a “kiss fit” setting.
See Help for more info about Smart Guides.

Here is a good link for you.

Showing us a screen shot along with your Layer’s panel really helps members help you.
I create screen shots on a Mac using Command+Shift+4.
Also you need to state what Illustrator version you are using.

To post a screen shot see:

Smart Guides are brilliant and if you aren't using them turn them on by hitting Apple U or Ctrl U on Windows. Smart Guides automate many of the tasks that the Align palette and normal guides perform. They take a little getting used to but once you are up and running you won't look back.
