The EOS 40d
Sooooo, im pretty new to photography, and am studying it next year at college... Luckily for me, my dad is quite into it and decided to buy a rather sexy looking Canon EOS 40d thingamy, and saving lots of money by importing it from the US!
First of all.. this camera is quite good right? We bought it because we've heard pretty good things about it, and its certainly a step up from an Olympos 3.2 megapixel job..
Are there any features i should look to be testing out? HDR looks fun! RAW + Lightroom..?
Basicaly... where to start? Im a techie guy myself so i would like to learn just abooot everything there is to know about this camera, as well ofcourse and taking some good photos!
Expect to be seeing some results soon!

welcome to the wonderful world of DSLR :-)
I would start by reading your manual, looking into maybe buying a magic lantern guide for the 40d (an advanced manual that tells you when to use certain settings and some good tips/ information...
Ten i would pick up "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson... This is a must have book for new photographers wanting to learn the most about aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and how they relate to eachother to get the best possible exposure.
Like always, enjoy your camera and i can not wait to see your photos! We are always willing to help you out once you post some things up

Yeah, "Understanding Exposure" is a great book.
I would definitely recommend going with a Raw + Lightroom workflow from the beginning, you will love it. The database management features of lightroom are amazing and the power user capabilities throughout the modules are very fun. Check out:

for some great lightroom tutorials ( I think Chris Orwig is one of the coolest educators out there, make sure to check out the creative tips videos as well)
