    Designing a movie poster

I have to do an assignment for school:
I have to create a movie poster, but I don't have the faintest idea where to start, or wich rules/guidelines I should follow.

I am fairly skilled with Photoshop, and I'm a fast learner.

So I'm asking here now if someone has any tips for me.

    Thanks in advance.

I wansn't sure a bout the level, so I decided to post it here in the newbie section.

A movie poster is all about getting people excited about going to see that specific movie... so think of it logically.
What would intrigue or get someone excited about the movie? Isolate something from the movie that would do that, and illustrate it in an interesting way. Maybe it's an attractive, well known (and well-liked) actor/actress, or maybe it's an action movie where the car is the hero?
It all depends, and that is what your job is to figure out, and then interpret in an interesting, intriguing, exciting way. Simple!

Dog... was spot on with his advice. I might suggest looking at the "trailer" (the preview) to get a good feel for what the art director and cutter feel is important. Plus, it will make it easier and faster for you.
