all i ask is readability.
Because an effective typography layout design calls for instant readability.
dingbats ok, if readable. so in other words, i presume that ur dingbats is used for design purpose.
i prefer pure typo-ists here, but that doesn't break the rules too.

padiq, I've used a couple of dingbats in my pieces, so I hereby declare that it is perfectly legal!

Don't forget about shapes...the clock face in my second one above is a custom shape.
I hesitated to use it, didn't know if it would break the rules. But in jusu's entry, the black background strip he used is a rectangular shape so I decided to go for it.

And I used a black panel plus outline... so therefore they're also legal!

as long as there's no layer styles, no shadows, no bevels, everything else is legal.
as long as its flat.
