Very, very basic question......

.... but that's why I joined this forum.
I'm totally new to Photoshop and I'm trying to follow Colin Smith's tutorial on making a Starburst effect.
The first thing Colin says is

"First thing we need to do is create a new document. I set my background to black to that I can see the white glint that we will prepare."

and this is my first stumbling block ! I have set the background colour to black and foreground to white, but the "drawing area" is set to white and I can't see what I'm doing. Can anyone get me going on the right track please.

fill ur document background with black
edit > fill > black
