Merged layer??

Hi there! I'm all new on everything, my mac and PS (recently swapped from PC and PSP) and I must say I like it all I've been doing a lot of tutorials to just try out, and I thought about doing the glassy orb thing. Well, my question, what is a merged layer? Well, I have the definition through Adobe Help Center, but how to I create a "merge composite layer" (acc. to the glassy orb tutorial) and what is it for? I hope someone can answer!

you can create a merged composite layer by pressing shift-ctrl-alt-e
