    Second-ever Portrait Shoot

    Hello all.

I am submitting six photos of a friend of mine. She volunteered to be shot by me. I took over 650 photos within 2 hours before sunset in a park. I will show you six of the top 15 photos. I hope you like.

    Equipment used: Canon10d; Canon 17-40L USM; Canon Spedlite 580EX; 36" gold/white reflector.

*Sorry to put this here but I must* You are not allowed to copy and use these photos. I have an itchy trigger finger and a SKS rifle to back up my words. Please dont push your luck**

    Nice model..... ok

the first - Needs more color. Try contrast or play with the levels (ctrl+L).
Second and third - Have to much contrast and color
fourth - Is a good shot, good color, BUT the sun!!!
fifth - Photo is to dark, try to lighten it up
Sixth - Also needs more color...

The idea is good, just ask someone to pose. 600 photo's is good (i even shot 750 photo's during a concert!!!). I hope you shot al the photo's in raw?

Do you like the camera? I had it too but think it's much to heavy!

Thank you for the feedback. This is where I state my philosophy. I do not manipulate photographs. I just add my name onto them. I believe that it is photography not art (though the two have blended). I am a purist when it comes to taking pictures.

Second. I shot all of them in .jpeg

Third. I like my camera. It's not too heavy, but it isn't nice and light as a point and shoot camera. I'm saving up money for a Canon 1Ds (but I think I will have enough to buy it in about 10 years ).

Thank you. Again this is just the second time I ever took pictures of a person. I still am learning and need to acquire a few more toys (i.e 2 large diffuser panels and another reflector)

I got a Canon EOS 5D. It really is a camera!!! All the photo's i shoot are in raw, that's because i can "manipulate" the photo. I'm not talking about manipulate because it's not what i do. I just give the photo more!!!

The shots you took are good, but need just that little xtra.... but that's just me.

They are lacking in color, but the comp is nice.

I really disagree with not using Photoshop, that is what it is there for

I don't agree with your "Purist" theory. If what you are saying is since Ansel Adams and Clyde Butcher spent more time in the dark room dodging and burning there photos then they did taking the picture then there work is not pure? Not Art? I disagree. The camera captures the image but the photo is created in the dark room.

Photoshop is the modern day dark room. To say that you are a purist and refuse to use it to manipulate your photos is like saying that you will only develop the negatives of what you shoot and not have them printed.....Sure.

All the photos are mediocre at best. Since you are a purist then I would suggest you use a warming reflector and maybe a filter on you camera....but that wouldn't be pure would it?

If you know how to use Photoshop then by all means use it. It will only help your photography.
