    Things that scare me...
    GENERAL RULES & AGREEMENTS:

2.3 All images submitted by Members immediately become the sole, exclusive property of Synapse Snaps, and the Member, by submitting, agrees to give Synapse Snaps an unlimited, unrestricted, non-exclusive, royalty-free right, to utilize any content submitted to Synapse Snaps for any purpose, both commercial and non-commercial.

2.4 By becoming a Member, Members forfeit any and all rights for financial compensation or recompense for any images they have submitted to Synapse Snaps, and Synapse Snaps will not compensate Members if Member-submitted images are sold as individual works or as part of a collection of works, or other sale.

2.5 Synapse Snaps maintains the right to use, publish, modify, archive, sell, and display all Member submitted images in any mode deemed appropriate by Synapse Snaps, including but not limited to: internet publication, newsletters, printed or non-printed books, magazines, posters, signs, promotional materials, presentation materials, etc.

2.13 Prize offerings are subject to change, due to availability, and prizes received may not be as exactly represented.
All that for a chance to win $25.

ewwww.. i really do not think that this is fair.. my artwork is not worth only $25.. i rather put it in the cafe to show or in my portfolio and earn $0 than to let someone own and redistribute my artwork..

Actually I think the amount of money is in the ballpark. Bigger sites offer less money for winners. Im fairly sure that freakingnews is only offering $20 per winner (albeit a daily winner)
Most artists I know of enjoy competition for the sake of itself, not the cash.
I noticed that the admin of the site has removed the caveat about 'prizes may be changed'. Talk about your rapid response team! Wasnt a biggie though, lots of legalese is needed these days to protect everyone from lawsuit. The verbage sounded like standard fare...I think I heard the exact same thing on the radio today about concert tickets or other giveaways. Someones always trying to make a quick buck thru the courts.

i think the whole idea here, is, the ownership and rights to OUR own artwork..

2.3 All images submitted by Members immediately become the sole, exclusive property of Synapse Snaps, and the Member, by submitting, agrees to give Synapse Snaps an unlimited, unrestricted, non-exclusive, royalty-free right, to utilize any content submitted to Synapse Snaps for any purpose, both commercial and non-commercial.

this line alone is scary enough.. how can and why should this be happening?

    Rules are pretty normal, actually

Here is a little sample from the rules of another image-contest:

"Submission of any entry constitutes consent to irrevocably assign to Sakura of America any and all rights to the entry including, but not limited to, all intellectual property rights, including copyright. Submission of entry further grants Sakura of America and their respective agents the right to publish, produce, and use artwork submitted and publish, produce, use, adapt, edit and/or modify the entry in any way and in any and all media, without limitation and without additional compensation. Submission of artwork constitutes permission to use winner's name, photograph and likeness for purposes of advertising and promotion for Sponsor without further compensation, except where prohibited."

Sounds like this is fairly standard stuff to me, doesnt keep me up at night (except tonite..ha)

It's about the thrill of conquest, not the agony of legal-talk...

Giving someone right to reuse your work is entirely different than giving them sole rights to it.

    Exclusive property. HA! No thanks.

The mere idea that Synapse Snaps can reuse the images commercially means they will be making money off of submitted artwork with absolutely nothing going to the artist.

And the fact that the artist gives up all rights to make money off the image as well is not ethical. Legal yes, but ethical?? NO way.
