color to greyscale

I was just wondering how to convert a color photo to a greyscale image without using PS filter.... there must be a way

Use the channel mixer
Click the grayscale option and adjust the sliders to please

You could always desaturate the image. I do not consider that a filter although you may.

Don't just desaturate the image - it doesn't really produce the best results. The boss man has it right. Go to Layer -->new adjustment layer and choose Channel Mixer. The box will pop up - in the lower left hand corner will be a little check box with the work monochrome next to it. select that box. then click okay. You can also mess with the sliders before you click okay to pop some of the weaker areas.
