    blending photos

    I saw some nice designs at http://www.templatemonster.com and I was wondering how they blend the various photos/images. I bought one to see if I could figure it out. There are 2 layers, each with an image. They seem to overlay the images, and the bottom image seems to have a transparency to it, but the opacity is still 100. How can I get 2 images to blend cleanly into one another?

    Bring up your first image (i.e. get it on your screen);
    bring up your second image; fit them both on your screen side by side; size the one on the right to the appropriate size relative to the other one (use IMAGE>>IMAGE SIZE); click on MOVE tool (or press "v"); click and drag your right image onto the left; bring up your LAYERS window (on my mac it's F7); activate (i.e. click on) one of the two layers (in the layers window); click on OPACITY (at the top of the layers window); move the little slider until you can see both images; line up the images the way you want them; if you need to resize one of the images use the transform tool on the active layer; click on eraser tool; carefully erase the unwanted areas on the active layer so you get a nice montage (if you want two overlapping parts of the images to blend into one another just leave those parts as they are); flatten image.

    Using a layer mask would be a safer way to go here.
