I posted this initially in my introduction a few days ago, but decided to repost it here where it better belongs...
I'd like to keep LR2 from automatically creating stacks when I make image edits in PS3.
I know I can manually remove images from stacks by right clicking on a stacked image, and Ctrl+A is a good method for doing that in "batch", but... I'd like to avoid the stacks from being created in the first place.
Here's a description of my workflow that shows where the stacks get "auto-generated":
I often have multiple different versions of the same image (i.e.- super saturated, b&w, resized for printing on notepads, note cards, coffee cups, posters or for specific print size aspect ratios etc.) that I would *always* like to see in LR side-by-side (always unstacked). Therefore after making initial edits to my "parent" NEF RAW file in LR2 I often will want to make edits to any one of its "children" JPEG files and do a [SaveAs...] to generate an additional version of the image.
To do this, in "Library" mode, I right click on the desired JPEG thumbnail and choose: [Edit In > Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS3...] In thefollowing "What to Edit" window, I select [Edit a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments] and ensure that the [Stack with original] option at the bottom of the window is NOT checked. Thenk I click [Edit].
The image opens and in the "title bar" at the top of the image window, file name is shown with the expected ".jpg" extension. Here's where the problem comes... Even if I make zero changes at this point to the file, and hit [Ctrl+S] to save the file, PS doesn't save the file as an indexed version of the original JPEG like PS normally would, rather it saves it as a PSD file with "-Edit" added to the file name before the new ".psd" extension. (If the file name was originally "xxxxxx.jpg" it becomes "xxxxxx-Edit.psd" and if "xxxxxx-Edit.psd" already exists, then the file is indexed and saved as "xxxxxx-Edit-2.psd"). If at this point I return to LR2 I see that the this new "xxxxxx-Edit-n.psd" is automatically stacked with original "xxxxxx.jpg" image. Remember, this occures even though I left the "Stack with original" option un-checked.
A work-around I discoverd is this: I go through the opening process as mentioned above. As soon as the file is open in PS however, I click [SHIFT+Ctrl+S] instead of [Ctrl+S]. In the "Save As..." dialog window that follows, the proposed file name defaults to ".psd" format, but allows me to change it back to ".jpg". Doing so... allows me to add my own indexing to my personal file naming convention, avoid having "-Edit" automatically added to the file name, saves the file as a ".jpg" and not a ".psd" and avoids the stack creation problem.
The trick is I have to remember to do a [SHIFT+Ctrl+S] in the beginning, because if I don't, the file format gets automatically changed, and the above mentioned "baggage" gets generated. I guess my questions then for you are...
1. Is there another (perhaps not-so-obvoius) LR2 settings option that I can set to manually disable stacking globally?
2. Is there a way I can have the [Ctrl+S] function in PS work the same irregardless if the opening of the image was initiated by LR2 or some otherapplication (i.e. directly from PS or Windows Explorer etc.)? (The way I'd expect [Ctrl+S] to always work in PS is that unless the opened ".jpeg" file is nolonger flat (i.e.-has had layers added) PS should override the file with the same file name shown in the image window's title bar. Or... if in the case the image was opened via LR2 with the "Edit as a copy" then it should know that overwriting the original name is not allowed and prompt me for a new name when trying to save.)
Sorry for the many words...
Your thoughts?
Cheers,
Martin
