This winter, we did the league portraits for the North Star Roller Girls. Here is a small selection of the league. One from each team and a referee.

Peace

Corker portraits, Greg! That ref looks seriously lecherous though.

Absolutely great shots !

The choice of black and white makes them look like old mug shots, which is great, especially on the girl with the tommy gun.

I love the "in your face !" look you've captured too, especially on Hype R Drive.

Excellent set!

You really connected with them to make them show themselves and be extremely comfortable in front of you. Too me and Barry hahaha, that is very important.

With the catch-light in the eyes, did you really light from below? Or is that just a reflector?

I agree with all the above, but i think it would be great to give it a little bit old look by added a bit of sepia tone..... Really, really little bit.

As always Greg.... You make my heart go tick and making sure i don't f&*k up my photo shoot from the guitar shop! :P

Thanks everyone.

so glad you like them. I was trying a new lighting style. The personality piece of it is that I've been shooting the league for 4 years now. Hard to get that level of comfort with the rookies tho' :)

The lighting set up was:
Mainlight: Powerlight 1250 at full power (f/11)
Chimera 4 ft x 6 ft softbox 8 feet from the subject

Backlight: Powerlight 1250 at 1/4 power (f/8
Shooting through a 3 foot translucent umbrella 3 feet above and 3 feet behind the subject

Reflector - 3 foot white on a tripod
goal to reduce shadow by 1/3

The mainlight was set so the light head was even with the subject face.

@dogtrombone - The ref is somewhat lecherous and he's also a lawyer, so nuff said, I guess :)

In that case, it is only alleged that he might look lecherous :lol

Great set full of character - the level of 'insider' knowledge shows in the quality of the results.

heh, a lawyer for a ref, ya think the fix is in? :P

Nice set of mug shots. Full of character. Except the last one. "Like, hurry up and take the picture already."
Not sure about the color in the frames. My eyes tend to end up looking at the brown smudge on the lower right. The first one is all b&w border. Much less distracting imho.

First two are my favorites.
