View Full Version : Weekly Challenge ( or twice a month challenge) starting 7.9.09 Selective Color Plus

cfire

OK, here we go:

Take a new picture. Do a "selective color" treatment to it (make it grayscale and leave one (or a couple) element(s) in color) and for the "plus" do any/all of the following; enhance the grayscale, enhance/edit the colored element(s) add any new elements/effects etc that enhance the colored
selection(s). The new elements can be color or grayscale.

Have fun! I can't wait to see the results/ :cheers

Great job everyone.
Looks like a fun little project.

Today I downloaded and installed Adobe’s Pixel Bender Photoshop free plugin.
http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/pixelbender/
I never knew about this. Fun stuff!
I also did some research.

Cool result and thanks for the link, it's always fun to play with new plugins (particularly free ones). And you're right, this is shaping up to be a fun one. :)
I doubt I'll get to shoot mine tonight, a Monday AM deadline looms and my progress today has been like running in water. :o

Frank, thank you for starting a fun and simple challenge!

I just happen to stumble upon Pixel Bender and Photoshop CS4.
So I thought I would share it.
It is so much fun to play with.
More toys in the toy box I always say.

In my research, I found a link by our very own Matt Keefe. :notworthy

That's twisted! ;) Seriously, awesome treatment.

Here's my effort.
Original shot taken in El Portal, California. Not a new shot, but a sorta recent one, if that counts. Nonfunctioning engine on display with a water tower and a working turntable at the other end.

Fixed as per visual suggestion by Frank.

Great shots and processing everyone!
@Frank i think that we shouldn`t have very stirct deadlines, twice a month seems guite reasonable

cfire
07-13-2009, 06:02 AM
Cool shot and recent (or even old if need be) are fine, it's all about learning and fun. I like your choice of selection here, the only thing I might suggest (not that it needs anything it really works well just as it is) but for fun you might try to enrich the colored part and maybe even tweak the levels of the B&W to try and get a strong graphic look. :)

cfire
07-13-2009, 06:03 AM
No strict deadlines at all, let's just see how it progresses. If people keep throwing them in we'll just keep this one going and when it fades we'll start a new one. :cheers

Nice edit Frank :), just a suggestion is it possible to allow the image edit here, it will much easier sometimes to show what one mean, Matt probably maybe can add some image edit sign to members profile if one allows the edit

Yeah, bugs me. Bugs me that I didn't go that far the first time. Gotta step back once and a while, give the ol'eyes a rest. :D Thanks for the alteration Frank. It really improved the image. I posted an updated image.

Ron~ It's all about the image and you made a great shot to start with. :)

Juha~ That would be tricky, editing directly wouldn't work (too much potential for abuse/headaches, etc) but a flag/permission system that would allow members to allow others to do as I did with Ron's (download, edit and upload to show examples) might be a very handy thing. It is a great way to show examples/suggestions when words alone don't do it and apermission system would take away the awkwardness of it. :cheers

Hi Colin!

I love the angle shot drama, the composition and the contrast of negative and positive spaces!

The warm tones give the photograph yet another contrast of dimension with what appears to be a cold winter day.

The selective colors really bring the viewer’s eye into the overall photograph to feast upon more.

Oh yes, I just noticed the textured bricks complete with giraffe on a stoplight.
Well perhaps in Photoshop Land they really do exist. ;)

Job well done!

I was thinking selective color should only be one color on a grayscale background.
Hmm…. No!
I Love your duotone + selective colors for much better depth.

Great inspiration! (Light bulb glowing)
Thank you.

Was on a conference call and got inspired.

I shot this photo back in March (Phil may remember it). Not my most intricate work since I did have to listen at the same time. :)

Nice one Polotik, great treatment!

I haven't had time to go shoot anything worthwhile so I did one on a shot I took in Alaska a couple of years ago for now:

Here's the original:

http://priboy.com/cafe/weekly/kayaksOrig.jpg

Cropped it as suggested by Jusu. Also cleaned it up a bit, looking at it today I saw that it was a bit rough but that's what you get a 2:00 in the AM after an 18 hour day.
:lol

I'm new to the list, and I know it's a no-no for newbies to post, but I've been working on just such an image, and so thought I'd try posting. I cut the one columbine bloom out and left color, than grayed the background and added the film grain filter to the background.

Best,

Tina

Welcome aboard Tina and it's not a no-no here, these little challenges are open to all and all skill levels. :)

Nice job, with the highlight it almost looks like a lamp. The only thing you might do is work on the edges a bit, maybe blur them with a small brush to soften them:)

Juha~Thanks! I almost cropped the original back when I first took it so you're probably right. :cheers

Ok i saw in a previous post where someone said it was a no-no for newbies to post is this true....cause i would love to participate in these projects if allowed.

As of yet i haven't taken pictures i am a little nervous because i do not know one thing about taken pictures, so i hope this is alright to use pictures from this website until i gain some skill and/or confidence to taking my own pictures. I love these challenges it will broaden my skill in Photoshop and maybe learn new ones at the same time.

wordsetc,
i agree with cfire that it does look like a lamp actually that is what i thought at first, as i scrolls past yours to post my image. one way to fix the jagged edges around your image (i am sure there are many ways) but the way i find that is the easiest for me is keeping the eraser brush hardness at zero, and then just adjusting the size of the brush to however big or small you want or need then erase it should make your image flow with the rest of the picture, and not like it was place on top.

hope this helps
xoxo
