HEALING BRUSHES HELP

I am a new user and when I click on brushes they don't work. The spot brush draws a blue line; the healing brush has a circle and a + sign. The area under the + sign is duplicated under the circle; and the patch tool just does nothing. I am pretty helpless until I figure out how to get these to work.

Use of these functions is very detailed and takes a bit of getting used to. Instructions on how to use them can be found in the Help menu inside Photoshop.
