tabs question

I set up a left justified tab halfway across my page to create a list,when I type return for line two my tab settings dont apply anymore and if I keep pressing tab key to get to next line it cycles through two more invisible tab stops I havent set before joining next line. When I start typing I keep pressing return for next line out of habbit and loose tabs again, also when i return to a paragraph to add more lines it will not tab in anyway, am I setting and using tabs correctly, How do I assign tab settings so I can create fluid lists until I select another new paragraph. Thanks

Have you looked up InDesign’s Help>Tabs and Help>Paragraph Styles?
