Select All the objects you want to align.
Open up the Align panel. Window > Align (Shift+F7)
Click on the Horizontal Align Center icon and then click on the Vertical Align Center icon.
Specify the spacing between grid lines
Edit > Preferences > Guides & Grid (Windows) or
Illustrator > Preferences > Guides & Grid (Mac OS).
OR
Select the Rectangular Grid tool (it lives with the line segment tool)
Double click on the Rectangular Grid tool for the Rectangular Grid tool Options box to open or after choosing the Rectangular Grid tool click once on the artboard for the Rectangular Grid tool Options box.
Enter your size etc...
Make sure your fill swatch is set to none and the stroke swatch is set to about 1pt weight. If your fill swatch is set for a fill your grid will look like one big filled rectangle.

Thanks uk2usadaz, I also found an align to artboard command on the side of the align pallet which is handy. The grid idea is wicked, snapping to grid is a bit awkward but creating my own grid and snapping to points on that grid works a dream, cheers
