I just got my first DSLR (Nikon D60) anyone have any suggestions for essential equipment for a newcomer?

filters! Okay, perhaps not a filter per se, but if not a filter definitely a piece of glass. It's a lot easier to replace a $20 filter than it is a $300-$1500 lens!

Nice purchase! what lens did you get with it? 18-55 VR??

Most essential thing for you now is Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson (unless you already know the ins and ourts of SS and aperture and iso and how they work together)

next is many photos posted here :cheers

congrats on camera

A tripod will be a good purchase... and as was said earlier - UV filter for the front! Keep it on forever! A Circular Polarising Filter is another great asset! I found getting a remote control for your camera was pretty cool too! (I have the d40x).

Eventually you will want a flash unit (sb600 is cool) to enhance your indoor shots (bouncing flash is the coolest thing).

I also endorse Understanding Exposure... it is the bees knees...

Congrats on the purchase. You will want to get a UV or Sky filter as mentioned here. Also, for expansion to larger size glass, I recommend a 67-70mm on the filters, then get a step-down ring to fit the other smaller pieces. The only caveat is you can't use a standard hood, but normally that's not a problem.

Post often, we all love photos :D

Thanks for the replies, guys. I bought some UV and polarizing filters, and now I'm planning on checking out Understanding Exposure.

Politik - I got the 18-55 VR and the 55-200 VR, it was part of the package.

Thanks!

Enjoy your money now, soon you will be broke and scraping pennies together for that new glass fix.

Don't forget the DVD on Exposure

Also a Tripod is the 1st thing to get after the UV Filter and a good camera bag and a Flash Card Reader

Wow Colin, can't believe I forgot about that one.

Yes, Tim's video is top notch. I was thrilled to have that training with me while in Japan, my photos came out a lot better.

I highly recommend this DVD. As a new DSLR owner, it will get you out of the Auto and Program modes in no time.

I'll be getting the DVD as soon as I get my own computer, which is hopefully in a couple weeks.

Thanks everyone!
