Hey, I've always had this idea that i thought would be really cool, but I have nowhere near enough skill to do it...just wondering if it would be possible...so here it is:

I was thinking it would really be cool to have a 3D background for your desktop, but instead of it just being a 3D render, you could actually move around in it, just like panning around in 3d studio max or w/e...I thought it could be cool to place folders and stuff around in this 3d environment...I kinda got the idea from some of the linux distros that have the 4 desktops that rotate around on a cube...let me know what you think!

You may be out of luck? Not sure how many designers out there use linux as an OS. :( Also just tryin' to give yer thread a bump.

Can't answer your question but here's how I see it.

Honestly, I think it will be unnecessary load on your computer's ram, video memory, graphics memory unless you have too much to spare.

Interesting thought, but it would only be suitable for someone with time to kill, imo. I need to get in and around my filing system as quickly as possible. I also agree with Elaine that it would probably take up unnecessary resources as well, and create potential for more stuff to go wrong?

Don't stop thinking though... nice idea!

I know it would be...I just thought it would be a cool thing to have...maybe someday when computers have terabytes of ram....maybe ;)

Well phosho,
I have heard about 3D desktop applications in windows OS. But don't know much about Linux. I wonder if similar 3d applications are available in linux.
