At my stepdad's birthday party last month, he got a new Nikon D40X, his first ever DSLR. He's been a long-time (a few decades) Nikon user and as we were playing with his camera, he pulled out some of his old SLR lenses. He had a 50mm Nikon lens that was about 18 years old and I absolutely fell in love with it. I started taking some portraits of my relatives as we sat around the house and loved the results. So, I started looking for a nice 50mm for my Canon, and came across this:

Anyone heard much about it? I want to build up my arsenal of lenses and this Sigma looks like a tasty addition.

I have only used the Canon 50mm but this lens you posted here looks like a very good one.

yeah, sigma just released it from what i hear. The good this is that it is USM, so it has the internal focus which should make it quicker and quieter than the canon or nikon.
As far as IQ though i am yet to see someone's posted shots

From what I know, the Canon 50mm 1.4 has USM as well.

+1 for canon over nikon... our 50mm is only driven by the cameras focus.

Ha! Found the place that I'll be ordering from once the 50mm comes out: www.sigma4less.com
Fantastic prices. The lowest ones I've seen and I checked their status at resellerratings.com and they have received a lot of positive reviews. The telephoto lens and fisheye lens that I had my eyes on are both about 30-40% less than retail price on this site.
I have a Canon EF 50 f1.8 II and for less than £70 I call it my plastic fantastic! Let me know if you want to see some samples...

My 50mm f1.8 is a garden and I dig it. If you look in "photography" under the gallery link on the previous page, then follow the link to "Luther," those pics are taken with the 50mm, hand held with light from a lamp and a television set. The bokeh is just killer with this lens and it's the cheapest piece of glass you can get for a Nikon. B&H has it for $110. You can see more on flickr if you look up grunner30
