Adobe has announced a public beta of Lightroom 2.
Check out the coverage on the cafe http://www.photoshopcafe.com/lightroom/index.html
Anyone can download and use the beta, however the program will expire after 30 days for people who don't currently have a Lightroom 1 license. In an unprecedented move, Adobe will allow existing Lightroom customers to send invitations to friends. The invitation will contain a serial number that will last the full term of the public beta. This beta is for Mac and Windows user

Wow, this is huge.. and perfect timing for me cause I am going on a bit of a photo adventure in the next few days. That localized adjustments and dual-monitor support is awesome.
I recommend everyone to download.

Hello,
I am not an existing Lightroom customer and I would be more than happy to be friends with anyone kind enough to extend an invitation for me to evaluate the Lightroom 2 Public Beta over the full term...... I am 69, a very keen photographer and I would value greatly such a profitable friendship!

Anyone can get 30 days, you'll only need an invite to continue after that

Damn, people really come out of the woodwork to actually post if they think they can get something for free. All of sudden, I've got all these friends! It wouldn't just be because of the Lightroom 2 beta invitation, would it?
Naaaaaahhhhhhh...

I was just about to purchase Lightroom 1.3 and saw the Beta 2.0. Instead of buying the old one, when the new one is about to be released, might someone be willing to invite me to the full-term beta? I know these requests are flying up all over, and I totally feel like a mooch, but i figured it can't hurt to ask!

I'll join the ranks of invitation requesters here for Lightroom 2 public Beta? I use Photoshop regularly but I just can't get a handle on workflow. I really want to try Lightroom out!! I don't ask for stuff like this, so I hope somebody feels generous. Thanks!http://www.photoshopcafe.com/cafe/images/smilies/NotWorthygif.gif

I was wondering if someone would be kind enough to invite me to try out the Lightroom 2 Beta, also.
In an effort to be a giver as well as a receiver, I would offer a thought I have about the FILTER View, after watching a few of the videos that discuss some of the new features. Wouldn't it be nice if the FILTER View would be added as an option for the Dual Monitor screen, along with the Grid/Loupe/Compare/Survey options.
Thank you, in advance, for your consideration of this request.

Update I had originally stated "requesting invites" was not good, however i was unaware this post was recommended for that :)
Ignore my previous comment on the subject please.
Thanks,
Matt

So... It's been three weeks since the Lightroom 2 Beta was made available for testing. People have brought up localized adjustments, dual-monitor support, whether there is any updates for the Web module, and consideration of adding the Filter View as an option on the 2nd monitor. Yet not much talk about the program has taken place.
What say we pour the java and kick a few things around. Besides the ones listed above, other possible items to share thoughts, feelings and wishes could be: 1.Localized sharpening, 2.Quick Develop adjustments in an expanded thumbnail view, so you can keep track of what you are doing to the image in that module, 3.Ability to set the "small-step" increments in the Quick Develop mode to 1/3 or 1/2 increments, 4.A separate book module, loaded with preset page designs and ability to customize sheets as you can with the Print Module's Picture Package (both image and text boxes), or 5.Anything that stands out to you after having three weeks with the program.
Looking forward to seeing what people have to say about the Lightroom 2 Beta. Regards, JML :cheers

Easily it would be the ability to load in about 2800 images without skipping a beat. The previous version would render my computer useless during this process.
I haven't been able to really tear it apart, but so far I am really looking forward to version 2 final!

I'd like to see a file browser in there, so I could move images around as well as a photo backup utility

mkeefe, a few questions about the approx 2800 images you loaded, please. Were they already on your computer and imported into LR2 Beta, imported from cards, or a combination of both? What file type did you import as? Did you notice much difference in the amount of time it took to import that amount of images compared to importing into LR1?
Regards, JML

The 2800 images were loaded from a CompactFlash II card (266x) using a USB 2.0 card reader. I never benchmarked the time it took, more important was the fact I could still use my computer.
I will check out the times though, now I am curious.
The files were all Canon Raw (.CR2) files at about 8-10mb a piece.

Good morning all,
Just wanted to take a moment to share an Adobe Forum link that may lead those that would like to receive an invitation to the full Beta 2 to actually getting one.
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/categories.cfm?forumid=72&catid=678&entercat=y
There are two forums there where people are obtaining invitations:
"Beta 2 invite?" on page 1, and "Digging LR 2.0 Beta - need help to continue" on page 3. As you can see, I was provided one by someone in the second forum listed within a day of my post there.
With all due respect to this website, I waited 15 days for an invitation through this site without a response, and received an invite at the Adobe site within 1 day. This is despite the fact that this forum is recommended as a good place to receive an invitation.
I am posting this message for two reasons:
1.) I think a software beta program that is being made available to the general public should be available to anyone (for its full duration) that has an interest in not only using the program but also is interested in wanting to make the program the best that it can be for everyone that uses it , and
2.) You never know who will be the ones that can realize a need and work to see that the need is fulfilled.
Here's a toast - "To the realization of a software program that will provide us with the ultimate work-flow for our digital photography needs" :cheers
Regards, JML

I have received one from a Flickr group I belong to - but as a beggar, I wasn't going to be a chooser! I am grateful for the opportunity to get right into Lightroom and see how it grows and stretches me! :)
Cheers JML... you make some good points!

Lightroom 2 is amazing! It works great, it's fast, powerful, and it really is the best software for photographers out there. (lol, just my 2 cents).
