View Full Version : while we're waiting...
The other day someone was talking about the importance of aiming your design towards the end user, and conveing a clear message through the design what the client is about.
Quote: "Sometimes you can't see if it's for a hairdresser or a tramservice!". Unquote.
So, let's make businesscards. One for a Company that gives sightseeing tramrides in a given city, and the other for a High-end exclusive hairdresser with outrageous prices. lol.
The tram-company is simply called Tramtrips
The hairdresser is called Tease
(tease sth out (SEPARATE) phrasal verb [M]
to use your fingers to gradually separate and straighten hairs or threads that are stuck together:
While it was still wet, I gently teased out the tangled knots in Rosie's hair.)
Here's a catch: One color only. Gradients are permitted. The businesscards should contain the following information: Company name or logo, a tagline, (is that what you call the company's "punchline" ?) Name and title of Managing Director, Address, Phone, Fax, e-mail, website.
Any takers?

That sounds great, only one problem (for me anyway) ... I'm building myself a brand new computer and so it could be a while before I get PS installed on it.

wouldnt there be 2 colours in gradients?
is white or black considered colour(s)?
You might make it, doug. :)
Ray, a gradient can also go from 100% to 10% on the same colour. :)
Another thought: The paper chosen to print on can be an important design element when you're working with just one colour. :)

lol. I'll try.
(tease - straighten out (separate) ...
I don't know what a phrasal verb is.
From the cambridge online dictionary:
Definition
phrasal verb Show phonetics
noun [C]
a phrase which consists of a verb in combination with a preposition or adverb or both, the meaning of which is different from the meaning of its separate parts:
'Look after', 'work out' and 'make up for' are all phrasal verbs.
I hope that made more sense to you than it did to me. :D
Ray, I forgot: white is not considered a color but black is.
Doug, you have got to stop being so modest. ;)

That's nice, Frank!
It's crisp and fresh, I like your colorchoice. It's maybe a bit busy, the eye is flying all over the place to take it all in. Really exclusive businesses tend to make things very simple, with plenty of unused space, it shows they can afford to pay for "air" or unused paper. Businesscards have to contain the given information, but the feeling of space gives exclusivity, so it's common to try and achieve that in everything conserning the business when you're dealing with upper-class products. One way to accomplish this is for example to make a two-sided card. I love the font you've chosen for Laura, - classy.
to everyone:
I hate commenting on other people's work, makes me feel like a hitler, but I will, because giving and taking and discussing critique is the best way of learning in my opinion. And after all, I have too much respect for you guys to just say "cool". I also appreciate being told when I'm just plain wrong, so sock it to me.
:cheers

Looking forward to it Daz, but won't you do both so we can see how the two companies are approached differently?
(that goes for you too, Frank)

daz, you ar a wiz. The tram drawing is beautiful, and realistic. Who cares what else is on the card! lol
Seriously, it's all very well put together. But who's card is this, where is the managers name and title?
I forgot, its done now :) Re-upped it!

OK, I like the "challenge" idea, and found some time to squeeze this in. Here's the hairstylist's card. Tram thing to follow, if I get the time. They are an upmarket stylist, so I've done a double sided card, using one of my own photographs. See what you think...

Now I like this one a lot. "May your fringe always be lunatic!" (LOL)
My only suggestion is that you should make the model a line art drawing. I'm not sure how to convey this here, but the second photo is what I'm referring to (less shadows, more white).
I believe the name is correct. Of course, I'm a little lost on emm's requirements in this regard - (tease sth out (SEPARATE) phrasal verb [M]. I haven't a clue what that means, sorry.
Nice job, DT

dogtrombone, I really like that! I don't think I have anything else to say, except maybe you could have a little more space under the .com, it's only a couple of mm from the edge, and you need to consider a "Give or take" mm for cutting. :) Beautiful!
Mr. Cloud..
Tease is just a name I found suitable for the hairdresser. It's a bit flirty, and and it also has a meaning hairwise. Meaning: running your fingers through your hair to straighten out any tangles. :cheers

I had another idea ..... make the bottom image the front of the card, with the name Tease! Maybe have the word Tease! "teasing" one strand of her hair, like right above her eye.
Then on the back of the card you could show the back of her head, kind of a reflection of the front image only in reverse. With a hint of her neckline (like in just a black line of her neck and say a small curved line for her shoulder). You could put all the info in the bottom right corner.
Just an idea...

Right, here's a Tramtrips card... rushed through to meet the client's deadline!
I've used black on a coloured stock, and die cut the edges, so I've placed the card on a tabletop to try and show the die cut effect. The tram trip is about seeing the old historical part of town, so the whole design is sort of based on a 30's/40's style of tram ticket. (The letterspacing was all done by hand in letterpress in those days, so we'll have no comments about spacing and kerning please!)
Right, now back to some real work! Nice idea emm!

dcloud... thanks for the thoughts. I did look briefly at curving the type of "Tease" to curl with the hair... but due to time restraints (and the guilt of knowing that I should be doing something else), I didn't pursue it... it required more time than I can afford to spend on it right now. Incidentally, the image on the back is the other half of the image on the front. I didn't use the back of the head, 'cos I didn't have that shot. Practical really! Hah!
Thanks digfects (mate!).:)

TRAMTRIPS = Hominis
"See the City" and address details = Grantham
"T. Ramdriver" = Gothic 520
"Master Engineer" = AtlasItalic
They're corker faces, based on actual books/newspapers typefaces from the early 1900's. Glad you like them... I really dig them too.

:)
I had a boss who used to say "there's never time to do things properly, but there's always time to do things twice".
I was meaning to illustrate the spot varnish effect. The paper is matt black, and then you varnish either images or like here a custom shape with a high gloss varnish. Very classy and expensive effect. I was in too much of a hurry last night, I hope I got better this time. :cheers
Can't wait for your next card, Frank.
See? Now I'm making people happy too. My day is made. :lol
