Hi All,
i am using photoshop cs3.
i hope someone can help me.
I have downloaded several new Layer Styles, from this site, and have placed the files into the Stlyles folder. But when i look for them in the Styles menu they are not there and I can't use them. All the shipped stlyes are there ok.
Has anyone come across this problem before? Does anyone know what is wrong?
Many thanks

I am not sure if you refer to the Styles that are usually in a tab together with Colour and Swatches, if so you not only have to download the styles in the respective folder in the CS3 directory but also add them to that tab, in CS2 is a little arrow on the right side of it.

Hope this helps :D and Welcome to The Cafe :D

Hi,
The Styles that I have missing should be found in Layer>Layer Style. You can see in that drop down menu: Drop Shadow.... Inner Shadow.... Outer Glow... etc. But the new Styles that I have added to the Presets>Styles folder are not showing and I don't know why. Hope that makes more sence. If anyone can help please.

Usually the styles listed are the default ones. To load other styles (like the ones you have) choose "Load Styles" (in the Styles fly out menu) and then browse to the folder where you stored them.

Another method of loading a Style preset file is to simply double click on your .asl file.
It will automatically load your new Styles in your Style Panel.

Many thanks for your help and advise. Still a little confused, is there a difference between Layer Styles and Styles? Layer Styles are located under Layers>Layer Styles where as Styles in the Styles Pallet seem to be different. Or am I wrong?

Let me see if I can explain this correctly.

When you double click on a layer the Layer Styles window opens, this is where you can add effects to your layer. At the top is the styles, this is the same as the Styles palette. whichever one you open there is a right facing arrow, if you click on that a drop down menu will appear and the new styles that you loaded should be listed there, they don't get listed with Drop Shadow and the other effects.
I just opened PS and noticed that when you open the Styles palette that the arrow is actually facing downward.

I hope that helped,

Pete

They are one and the same.

Where do you think styles come from? They have to be created first - using the layer styles.

Go to the top of PS on the menu, click window and under the window drop down click STYLES to get the palette, in this styles palette click the triangle on the (top right) and your newly placed styles should be there ready to load.

When you create a LAYER STYLE and save it, the above (STYLES) palette is where you will find it!

RayArt, maybe this will help.

Like Doug said, they are one and the same. Create your layer style, save and store your style.

Styles/Layer Styles have several locations.
