Hi, I am a fan of AlienSkin plugs and have used them for a long time, but after installing CS3 and the recent set of AS plugs, I could not get them to install until I found this:

My question is, how much of a performance hit is this for using PS3? Seems to act the same to me....

i think i figured it out, for mac/intel some plugs have UB updates while others don't (yet?) so if u have a mix u can run in rosetta emulation to get them all to work. Alien charges for the UB update which just seems like highway robbery to me. well, that's that...still not sure what running in rosetta means to a mbp, which seems pretty fast anyway.

well, it seems many folks charged for upgrades based on OS changes, but this one is a "flavor" of an OS...like a point upgrade. but everyone is doing it, even for leopard.

It must be a hell of a OS then.......

A lot of people charged because the code has to be completely rewritten for Intel in many cases. They can't use Code Warrior and have to switch to Apples X tools. Its a major process

Thanx for clearing it up. Didn't think about that....

really? recode or just a recompile? the alien plugs seem identical to the pixel as tested on one ub upgrade. but at least they put a cap on the price for upgrading the suite.

in the case of DFX 55mm, another suite that i am very fond of, they changed companies right in the middle of the mac/intel release and repacked the product with an offer to existing users. waiting now to see how much that is.

but rosetta emulation does not seem to be too big a deal. or is it? is there a downside to it?

Recompiling in a totally different environment isn't just a matter of cutting and pasting the code.

Rosetta works a lot slower than native software support. It gets you by, but in a lot of cases (Such as Creative Suite) Running and emulator on Intel based machines is slower than running them native on the old IBM chips.
