Yesterday Northern Illinois University had a party type thing for the whole college. It was outdoors so no fancy lights (from 2 - 6). My girlfriends dad asked me to take some shots of them playing (it was during their last song). So after my photos they finished the song and started packing up. Im a beginner but i saw my chance :-). I went up and started talking to them (finding out the name and all) and asked them if they would want a copy of my shots, i would have them online for them to see. Was this the right choice or should i have tried to sell them? She told me they would link to me from their site if they wanted some photos and they wanted a business card of mine :blush (i dont have one) Should I charge them?

This is my first time ever shooting stuff like this (band)

I need some critique about these photos and the final outcome of the processing.
Sorry for large size. If needed, i can link to them

Hi there, we are a full service recording and A/V studio here in Nepal and do this kind of work everyday (end of blatent plug) so here are some recommendations free of charge:
:D

* on a set, we don't do any soliciting except to hand out a card. u really need them. make a special set of cards that would appeal to musicians in need.

* i like taking photos of artists in action, but i always get their permission first, and always with a contract signed to do the work, first. this way you can get on the set of the gig and unobtrusively take the best shots. If it's just for fun from the audience perspective i practice...more on that here...

* things to practice: rule of thirds composition, avoiding strange protrusions of mikes and other equipment, avoiding or getting the best guitar face, and exposure of faces and equipment under tricky light.

* on your samples:
- on the first photo: strange protrusion of mike, lame guitar face.
- on the second: not bad, but action is stopped with a penis stick. would be more interesting with stick in motion. background washed out and chrome a little blown but fixable in PS
- on the third: better, but the backdrop sucks. i would key it all out and replace.
-on the fourth: watch the rule of thirds, closed eyes, blown chrome, boring backdrop, but great subject!

Well, i hope this helps! shooting live performances in either still or video is a lot of fun but requires a bit of practice and hard work... all rewarded when you get that great perfect shot. good luck - you can do it!

Well here's my thought:

I never hand down any photos, if they want it, they have to do something for it. They don't have to pay for them (there musicians AND therefor they don't have money :D), but the most see me taking photos and they ask if i could send them some. I then give them my card and tell them to email me. If they do, then i send some back....

Like the White Cowbell Oklahoma (from Canada!!). They mailed me and asked me for photos.... now 6 photos are on the new cd from them (inside the cover!!) with my name on it too! Everytime there in Holland, i just have to call in and my name's on there list. That's more value than money, to me.

Drinking beer, making snapshots and having a good time is all i need.

I do paid jobs and that pays well (€50 a hour)...

Here is our studio band, Jerry Julian and the Power of Joy (Nepal's only Reggae Band) at last year's World Aids Day in Damak. 6,000 Bhutanese Refugees under 20 who have never heard live reggae before. As you can see, they enjoyed!

Thank you for the great replies!

WHen i took these shots the intention was not to offer them to the band but have some photos for my girlfriends dad who just wanted me to grab a few near the end of their last song so to tell the trueth these where mostly "snapshots"

Tell me what you think of the new edits!
