hi all... i'm new to this forum and indesign. i was wondering if i placed a black colored object made in illustrator into indesign, why can i not change the color settings (so that it will be "black" color from the swatches)? also i cannot ungroup it, to change parts of the design.
the reason i used illustrator, was to trace a .jpg logo... end result is a cmyk document in indesign for printing.
thanks in advance for all your help!

hi lotus girl, i don't import illustrator into InD, but I place a lot of photoshops and the place feature seems to be read-only. I always just go back to photoshop, do a save, and have the links palette open in InD to do the relink for the update in 2 or 3 clicks. hope this helps.

but aren't object created in photoshop raster as opposed to vector?
Lotusgirl, Welcome to the Café.
InDesign: File>Place LINKS your Illustrator object. No you can not change color of your logo using InDesign Swatches.
To change the color of your logo, you need to do that in Illustrator and Save. Go back to InDesign and update your link.
You can also embed Illustrator objects by copy and paste into InDesign. Doing so, you can then use InDesign Swatches to change colors.
Illustrator is an excellent choice for creating vector logos.

Yeah I copy/paste vectors if I need to further manipulate them in InDesign.
• For vector, 99% of the time, I copy and paste Illustrator objects. If I want to add extra effects like a drop shadow, I do that in InDesign not Illustrator.
• For photos, I usually Place images and revise in Photoshop, then update the link.
As for Swatches, I usually create a color scheme for the project. Then save those swatches for exchange as an .ase file.
Ase files can be opened in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.
For logos or vector objects, in InDesign where I use them on multiple pages, I create an InDesign Snippet and store in the Bridge or desktop.
Oh so cool, just quick a drag and drop instead of copy and paste.
