i have absolutely no idea when it come to 3d...i'm firmly a 2d man!

however, i am trying to help a friend out by making a 3d screensaver. all i want to do is create a "medallion" style logo that revolves around the x-axis.

is there a software (preferably free, seeing as i will only use it once)that can just extrude by 2d design?

thanks.

paul.

Dear firm 2d man,
well, what do you have already? Photoshop? Illustrator? What will you use to create the art or what do you use that you are comfortable with? I think there is a lot of free stuff out there, although I don't use any of it. But I do have a lot of 3d tools. My favorite for ease of use and fast renders is Carrara Pro. But the new version of Photoshop has 3d built in, and Illustrator has had 3-d extrusion for awhile. If u know illustrator, I guess you could create the art there, but then ya gotta animate it. In what? Imageready? Ick. Flash? better. Do you have after effects? that will do it too - and pretty darn fast. I think everything mentioned so far has a trial download that works for 30 days. one or all of them should get you thru. My mind is a bit fried at the moment, there is probably more to say...and there are a lot of smart folks here who can say it!

I think you can get an earlier version of Bryce, quite possibly for free, at www.daz.com
You would be able to extrude type, assign practically any texture to it, and animate it (I think!).

thanks for the tips guys.

currently i am using Photoshop CS and Flash 8 and that's it!

after some surfing i found that Xara3d coupled with XaraExtreme can extrude text and vector images, rotate them and even save them as a screensaver!

however, it all depends whether my buddy wants to spend the paltry $50 it costs.

i will check out your suggestions and see what i can find.

cheers.
