View Full Version : Minimum of posts required :: Suggestion

I was just thinkin about the spammers that sometimes get around here, and thought on something:
as ive seen on other forums, there's a minimum of posts that u must achieve to be able to create new threads.
i think its a very efficient technic...

but u might asking: what? wouldnt that increase the spammers instead of reducing? yeah maybe, but for example, if the minimum is 10 posts spammers wouldnt be able to spam, cos they usually post only one thread, and the ppl who wants to reach the 10 posts will not spam for sure too, cos the number is low...
but cannot be too high, or the visitors will decrease (nobody gets on a forum where the minimum of posts to create a new thread is 1000 for example..lol..)

a problem would be in the introductions area, cos ppl would introduce themselves not on the 1st post, what doesnt make much sense, but its not bad at all...

lol, just a suggestion, what ya guys think??

Lets think about it. Although the Mods do a fantastic job of catching spam very quickly

Unfortunately the spam is a way of life. I think minimum posts detrimental. If I am dead tired, I don't post, but even when flat out I'll post if there is desperation in a query and I can help. If they do slip through my suggestion is politely ignore. If a spammer is baiting you, he is only getting the satifisfaction of an angry reply. If it's spam spam everywhere, they won;t look back and won't care, so an angry reply post only annoys only the baord.

Something the moderators may consider---First Post? Spam? Delete the user. Period. Semi regular user? Obvious Spam? Delete the user.

In my limited time of visiting here I think the board is pretty clean and well run. Have not seen flamers (reasons I dropped off other boards in the past) Everyone is pretty well behaved. And good info of course.

We delete the user and block the ip address of all spammers already :)

i think that pedro (pm) has a point there but may not work as pscafe offers help, and some people come in here to ask questions on ps, cant be that they have to comment or post on 10 other threads before they can ask their own questions.. and the introduction section wouldnt work out too..

what i would suggest is validation at registration, either put them through captcha test or they must enter valid email address, confirm registration by clicking link back to forum. usually these spammers are spam bots, meaning they arent real humans but robots which went around spamming forums. And these bots would usually pick sections of forums with the most amount of posts or most amount of replies.. so firing them off at the registration stages would be good. if they cant register, they cant post.

In reality. The spammer will just find a way around it. At what cost will we make restrictions to our dedicated user base, which are not abusing the system. I think you can set it to make it a randomly generated graphic for every post. So a program cant just spam over and over again.

I dont feel it is that much of a issue since our mods do such a great job. But if it became overwhelming that it kept turning over into u2u's etc. Than I would say something needed to be done.

Personally I think that the Mods do a pretty good job at catching spam and other crap that just doesn't belong here, and it's true that they can't catch everything, but we can all help out and keep our eyes open and report things that we are unsure about it...

I mean there are alot of members and the Admin and Mods can always use a little help from the community...;)

Just my 2 cents...:D

Some boards (DPReview, for example) will not accept registration from people with web-based email addresses (Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.), rather they require e-adds from their ISP (Comcast, Cox, etc.). Seems to me it would be easier to ID a spammer and file a complaint with his/her ISP. Add validation to that and methinks the spammer issue here would diminish.

Agree that the mods here do a great job of canning those idjits....thanx, guys!

Limiting threads is detrimental in the long run because new users need to post questions. Also, limiting the email addresses is also a bad idea because non-professionals don't always have domain names or ISPs that offer email.

And I wouldn't have been able to register.. don't delete me :O

Overall spam isn't too bad here, the mods and admins do an awesome job and I think its in line mostly.

I had to delete a few messages in the Cafe to get rid of url's that were easily backtracked. Had a ration of spam and some very interesting spamalama, via hotmail & yahoo accounts that were bogus.
Whether it had anything to do with me joining this group who knows?
Last Saturday our website was hacked Homepage looked quite like what happened PScafe last Friday, thankfully it was a quick fix.
Am still not sure how they did it or is our webhost, somehow I ended up with a index.htm. file.
Were still using FrontPage, I know :) Now you can beat me up;)
Regardless I think this is a great place and thanks to all for making those boring days alot of fun!

What are you referring to? The cafe didn't have a problem on Friday that I am aware of... Also, do you mean your URL in your profile, if so, the Cafe is popular but wasn't the cause of a site being hacked.. unless I missed something here.

Sorry Matt I am not much of a writer, Last Friday the Cafe got spamed big time with someone trying to sell software out of Singapore.
The URL I referred to is that I posted pictures off my site, back tracked to the site which has e mail address's on it. Since then I started using Flikr.
I never meant to imply PScafe had anything to do with it or that it was the cause of my site being hacked.
I suck at writing.
