A little problem with Quicktime player and etc

I'm having some problems with quicktime that I haven't had before. My player use to be able to play avi files but now it can't. I know it's because of the upgrades apple sends (My quicktime player is the 7.1.3 version).

Quicktime isn't my only problem; imovie use to work well for me but now the Titles area won't let me put words in my videos (the update button doesn't highlight when I have something ready..then again I should tell you that I haven't used Imovie in a long while so let me know if I'm doing something wrong).

With these problems that keep comming I'm afraid to download any updates in fear of something else getting screwed (like itunes). Should I downgrade my programs? And if so should I just get the update and download it or should it be done another way.

I got an old version (7.0.4.) and it's a standalone version. I install this but i never use it. You have to have it on you're computer because some internet page use it!! It's not upgrading and not starting up at the beginning...
