This might give you a kick in the right direction:

paint them black, use the burn tool or selective color change under...er...let me launch photoshop, Image>Adjustment>Selective Color>select whilte from the dropdown menu, push the black fader to the right.
or select everything but ur friend and use the paint bucket tool to fill it w/ black
and many other ways

Incedentally, if you want a perfect inversion of highlights/shadows without affecting your hues, you can
(a) change to lab mode and invert the lightness channel and go back to RGB; or
(b) invert the picture, go into Hue/Saturation, and shift Hue to +180.

Lasso Tool (2nd one from topleft corner) draw around your friend, once done that, go to Select>inverse. There, you got everything but your friend selected. Then just paint bucket with black ink.

There are four different options with the lasso, all will come in useful if you have butterfingers.
Default setting is new selection. this is the one you have been using.
Add to selection is useful if you, for xample, accidentally didn't select half someone's head. With the selection still active, go back and select the rest of the head and it will add it to the selection.
Subtract from selection would be useful if you accidentally caught some background between fingers or whatever.
Intersect with selection will allow you to make smaller and smaller cuts. It will select the very middle portion of two overlapping lasso paths.
Hope this helps. :)

as far as the lasso tool goes hol ddown ctrl before you start and this will allow you to let go of the mouse button without closing your selection.
