Glass fascia

I would *really* love to be able to present images behind a clear glass fascia, such as the Apple compass on their website, or the Mac Netscape startup plugin icon etc...

Is there an easy way for a newbie?

check the tut under glass button. There are many out there, that is one way. One common principle is if you want a smooth glass surface, then basically, you are just imitating light reflecting off a surface that isn't really there. There are also inner glows and inner shadows to consider depending on where the edges off your glass is supposed to appear to go.
