When I try to be very smooth with my erase tool the circle is "jumpy" instead of smooth. Is this a mouse problem, or maybe a video problem with my computer.

If your mouse has a track ball open up the little door, clean off the ball and 3 or 4 rollers.

Decrease your brush spacing.

Also avoid dark surfaces, I hear that black causes a lot of problems with optical mice

Ooh and reflective surfaces (metallic mouse pads, glass table tops, etc.). Good thinking.

If it is actually caused by laser scattering, get one of the "specialised" mouse matts out there if you can afford it. There are many:
Razor ExactMat
Slicksteel Pro
Everglyde
Icemat (probably got the best name for itself)
Corepad Organge/Blue
All of those are designed and manufactured specifically for optical mice to give the best coverage and traction etc.
If the mouse is dying, i recommend the Logitech MX1000. Ive had mine for a good while now and its served me well...And its around £30 now (i paid £50 months back when it was still the new kid in town)
