hmm...i follow the instructions for 'full resolution ', and my image is 1650x2175... is that right? if so, it'll take forever for me to render anything on my slow computer...
:(
can anyone help? or shall i just not make my image in full resolution...?

11-17-2002, 12:56 PM
Stuster,
you will not be the only one having problems with the filesize.
When rereading posts here at the Café
regarding the "size" of members computers it seems many more will have problems unless it´s a one layer image
;-))
The file size is one of the reasons I am not entering this contest.
Can you imagine creating an image at
this size on a 300 with 128 internal ?
That´s a joke :lol

Sorry Guys, but if it's a "real world" contest and it's actually going to be printed , then there's just no other way. :)
Cappy
11-17-2002, 03:02 PM
You could design it in quadrants............work your general layouts in a low res file / after the intial idea/design stage..........build it in quarters / when it comes to submission time, combine your quadrants and let the computer crunch while your at lunch.......it is a little extra work, but it does work. Speed is no reason not to enter.......... 12 years ago I was designing with 8 megs of RAM and a 512 Meg Hard drive running photoshop 2.5, CorelDraw 3 and Quark, you can do it and you will learn tons because of it.............. Just a thought.......
Cappy:) Al, three years ago I did work on a simalar machine............and made money, and kept the deadlines.........I am not bragging, I am just saying that you don't need the hottest/largest capabilities out there to make things work......... I guess it depends on how important it is for you to enter?:)

11-17-2002, 03:32 PM
Cfire,
you are correct !
As it´s a PS Café contest (our small world)
maybe it would have been fine if the majority can join ?
Cappy,
is it possible to use your idea and stiil follow the rules as to provide a PS file
with all layers intact ?
Important for me to enter ? Not this time.
AL
Cappy
11-17-2002, 03:47 PM
Sure Al. I would just hate to see anyone not enter because they feel they have limitations...................because they don't............ it works, believe me. But, It takes time. I think it is important for everyone that wants to enter, to enter. Designing in quadrants is only for the intial design stage...........moving the parts / objects type layers / will have to be given consideration when placing in the final image and the design will have to match that............. come on, join in.......
stuster
11-17-2002, 03:52 PM
so the winner of the contest is going to get their entry printed and stuff??
Cappy
11-17-2002, 04:00 PM
That gives it an added bonus......... I think Colin is setting up for that........ those specs follow what a printer would need............. wouldn't it be a hoot to see your stuff in print............?:D Definetly worth some extra time........... for the old portfolio.........
stuster
11-17-2002, 04:40 PM
right, thanks for your help..
i'm gonna give it a shot... although i might go mad with render waiting times by the time i finish anything!
:)
Cappy
11-17-2002, 04:52 PM
Stu, lay out all your ground work in low res.....when you have it where you want it, just rebuild everything in high res......... if you can locate your scratch disk on a different drive than your PS program that helps, also allocate 80% of your RAM to PS and don't run anythying else, including your dial-up............all of your steps and layers are right there, you just need to duplicate them... For me it is always the engineering stage that gobbles up my time, and the computers resources.......... hope that helps:)
kiwicolin
11-17-2002, 09:21 PM
Here is a suggestion: If you have limited speed on your machine: Produce the image lowres, take notes of all the steps and save any paths and layer styles. Enter the contest with the low res. If you win, then rebuild the file as a high res.
Yes, I am planning on getting the winner printed, but there is a very good chance that the title will be changed and there will need to be some modifications made for marketing purposes. I think it would be a good idea to use the winning concept for the actul cover art. I could just design it myself, but I thought it would be fun to let you guys get involved. It will also be great experience for the winner to be involved in a real world project, I will personally work with them, through to print.
Right now, don't worry about the final specs too much, I will work with the winner on the final image and if need be, i will rebuild it on my computer.
I remember when I was producing 11x17" images on a Pentium 133 with 16 meg of ram in Photoshop 3.0 So I know it can be done.

Could you do at at 300 res but at half the dimensions of final product?
stuster
11-17-2002, 09:35 PM
thanks again guys...
yea, i was planning on doing it low-res, then hi-res if i won....
it would be so cool to have on of our designs actually printed and used... wow...

Stu,
What version of PS are you working in? I had the same problem, but then I somehow managed to get it fixed. I would be willing to bet that it is the same thing and I would also be willing to retrace my steps to find the answer for you. Let me know.
