icon question

ok on some sites they have a little icon in the adress bar .. and if you drag it down to your desk top you get thier custom icon on your desk top.. how is this done and what size does the pic have to be and is there a limit to the colors you can use?

First of all I am not postive on how this effect works But I think you could find a great way for it on a google search hunt.

I was once told you make an icon with a ICO extension and place it on you site...never did they tell me on how to make it appear on the address bar.
So when you find out...please fill us in!:notworthy
