I'm trying to make a logo which is made up mainly of a background and text, thats it.

Why does the font look crappy?
I like Times New Roman but when it's displayed on a picture it is very bad quality, even changing the smoothness, crispness, it still looks crap.
I haven't enlarged the text in any way apart from before typing, so I'm not stretching the font or anything.

When you use a text editer of some kind, the quality stays the same if you enlarge the font so why does it look so bad when you place text on a picture?

I'm using Photoshop7 and I'm using a windows pc.

You need to place your background in a vector-based program like ex. Illustrator and then add the text. That way your text is vector and not pixel. :)

What size percentage is the canvas set at? In Photoshop, if the canvas size is larger than the work area, it automatically makes the size percentage smaller (66.67% for a 1024x768 canvas on a 1024x768 screen).

Even though its made smaller, Windows gives the appearance of rubbigh looking text. Make sure its at 100%.

I have used times new roman many times and it always looks perfect in Photoshop. Cant understand what your problem may be if it isnt that.

You're right, I was getting a false impression.
Although I didn't select 'smooth' as an option either which kinda compounded itself worse.

I was trying the same logo with Verdana which was actually worse.

Thanks for the replies.
