If you're looking for a lower priced way to get PS try Ebay. That's how I got my copy of PS7 fully registered and 100% legal for $279.00. I acutally bought it from a software retailer but they were advertising on Ebay. :)

windows
start button >
shut down >
restart in dos mode >
then in dos mode (should see a letter c:\ and a blinking cursor) type: format c: /u
alternativly if you cant see restart in dos mode hold down f8 when you start the pc
thats all there is to it
hope you got your drivers ready and software backed up but i say if you dont know how to do it you dont know what your getting yourself into god knows how to format a mac and if your re-formatting linux just re-run the install disk thats easier than command line

Another option that would get you by for awhile is Adobe Elements 2. Not as powerful as big daddy Photoshop, but all the filters are there...so a lot of the effects you do in PS can also be done in Elements. I understand your plight, but chances are you will be hard pressed to find a 'free' version of PS anywhere. Sure it is expensive, but there is a very good reason for that. That initial investment a few years ago literally changed my career.
I hope you find a satisfying end to your quest!
